Notes on different versions

In the Guarini edition, the first line reads Lasso, perché mi fuggi. Among the first settings of this version are Pasquale Tristabocca, Second book for five voices (1586) and Annibale Coma, Second book for four voices (1588), and later Ruggero Giovannelli, First book for three voices (1605). Giovannelli also set the version Ohimé, perché mi fuggi in his First book for five voices (1586). Marenzio’s text (Crudel, perché mi fuggi) is shared by Benedetto Pallavicino in his First book of madrigals for six voices (1587), and gives rise to a later tradition of settings that includes Monteverdi Second book for five voices (1590).
